Positive Response

What is Positive Response?

Positive Response closes the communication loop between member utilities and excavators. It enables each member utility to clearly report the status of an excavation notification—whether facilities are marked, cleared, or need further action—so excavators have definitive confirmation.

How does it work?

Excavator submits their excavation notification to OHIO811 via phone, i-dig, or e-dig

Excavator receives a reference number (811 ticket number) and allows 48 hours* for member utilities to respond.

Member utilities respond via Positive Response

Member utilities will mark identified lines using the Ohio Universal Marking Standards and record all responses through Positive Response within 48 hours* for Routine notifications.

Excavator checks the status of Positive Response

Excavators should check Positive Response prior to commencing excavation and confirm all notified utilities have responded. It is also the responsibility of the excavator to verify utility markings are visible and to notify OHIO811 if markings have been destroyed or removed.

*48 hours does not include holidays or legal holidays.
